snàth handspun yarns and handknits

unique yarns and handknits, made with traditional skills

Thank you, Liz!

Many thanks to Liz Lovick of Northern Lace in Orkney for her comprehensive explanation of the differences between and using the traditional knitting stitches Old Shale and Feather & Fan.  I am a great fan of Liz’s work, and also of the Old Shale Shetland stitch, which I often use in special knitted garments.  To date I’ve only knitted one whole Shetland-style laceweight shawl, which was a commission to celebrate the birth of friends’ grand/great-grand child.  I would love to knit more of these shawls, and  needless to say, Old Shale featured in the lace border.
